Gongfu tea doesn’t require a lot of equipment — but a few essential pieces make the whole process work. Here’s exactly what you need, and what you can skip.

The Essential Teaware (Must-Have)
1. Brewing Vessel: Gaiwan or Small Teapot
The heart of the setup. A 100–150 ml gaiwan is the most versatile and affordable choice. A small Yixing clay pot is a wonderful upgrade once you commit to one tea type.
2. Fairness Pitcher (公道杯, Gong Dao Bei)
You pour tea from the gaiwan into this pitcher first, then into cups. This ensures every cup has the same strength — otherwise the first pour is weak and the last is strong. Not strictly required, but strongly recommended.
3. Tasting Cups
Small cups (30–60 ml) are the gongfu standard. You’ll want at least 2–4 cups to share or compare infusions.
4. Kettle
A temperature-controlled kettle is the single best upgrade — it takes the guesswork out of water temperature. Any kettle works if you’re careful, but variable-temperature is worth it.
5. Tea Tray
Gongfu brewing is deliberately splashy (you rinse the leaves and warm the cups). A tea tray catches all that water and keeps your table dry.
